The MESMERIC method is for people navigating substance use or behavioural addiction who, for the most part, are still functioning day to day yet recognise their slippage and want a structured way to change course.
You may find inspiration and support in this method if you:
- feel the drift and want to correct course.
- need a system to keep you accountable and nudge the trend line back in your favour.
- believe or know from experience that small, steady changes achieve better results than heroic attempts.
Whilst individuals and circumstances differ, the MESMERIC method is most likely to benefit people who are — at least to some extent:
High-functioning…
…though fraying. You keep the show running — work, parenting, studies, and basic routines etc. — but it costs more energy than it used to and corners are being cut.
Still somehow in control.
Despite regular substance use or addictive behaviour, you retain the capacity to make small, steady changes.
Out of denial.
You recognise that there is a problem, even if it’s just a quiet voice at the back of your mind.
If the above apply and the exclusion criteria are not met, MESMERIC can be suitable for both:
- Active users — regular, ‘regular-occasional’, binge-pattern, or mixed-pattern users; and
- Post-stabilisation — after detox or a crisis reset, re-entering ordinary life.
Here are some typical scenarios in which the MESMERIC method can serve:
- your addiction is not severe enough to qualify for substance-misuse recovery programmes; or
- mainstream approaches haven’t worked for you or don’t fit your circumstances, and you’re ready to try something structured yet outside conventional treatment models; or
- you cannot afford to enter detox/withdrawal and temporarily fall apart, and want a clear map for gradual reduction instead; or
- you’re back home after detox or a crisis reset and want scaffolding to maintain progress and prevent relapse.
ATTENTION!
The MESMERIC method is not an emergency tool. If anyone’s health or safety is at risk today, reach out immediately to professional services and stabilise first.
If the boat is taking on water, patch the hull first. Medical care, detox, temporary distance from triggers, family safety plans and financial safeguards come first. (Read more on the method’s limitations.)
Microdosing for addiction and the MESMERIC method belong in the chapter after that. Return here when the waters are calmer and you have a firmer grip on the steering wheel.
But if your boat is still afloat — even though rocked by crosscurrents and pulled in the wrong direction — MESMERIC can help you catch a steadier wind and set course for calmer waters and a clearer day.
