Most reported side effects of microdosing psilocybin are mild. However, less common and more significant reactions can occur, depending on individual factors and context.
In some cases, symptoms improve with dose adjustments or changes in fungal species, type (fungi/truffles), ingestion form, or preparation method.
More common:
- headache,
- jitteriness,
- anxiety,
- gastrointestinal upset,
- appetite or sleep changes,
- brief sensory sharpening (lights, sounds),
- mild temperature sensitivity (warm flushes/chills),
- transient BP/HR increase,
- sleepiness or mild dizziness.
Occasional:
- irritability,
- rumination,
- fatigue,
- mood destabilisation,
- difficulty concentrating,
- overstimulation,
- restlessness,
- nervous energy,
- racing thoughts,
- hypomania-like symptoms.
Rare:
- derealisation-like sensations (brief feelings that the world looks or feels unreal),
- depersonalisation-like experiences (feeling detached from oneself),
- perceptual sensitivity beyond baseline (e.g. lingering visual or sensory changes),
- other uncommon perceptual or dissociative experiences,
- emotional blunting or flattening,
- sleep disruption not resolving with dose adjustment.
If side effects are mild and manageable, consider adjusting the dose, spacing, fungal species, ingestion form, or preparation method, and monitor changes carefully. If they do not improve despite adjustments, pause microdosing and speak with a clinician.
If any sensations become persistent, intense, fatiguing or distressing, discontinue microdosing. This may indicate that it is not suitable for you at this time.
If you experience symptoms resembling dissociation, hypomania, mania, or psychosis — even if never formally diagnosed — discontinue microdosing and seek medical advice promptly.
